Uses:
Are used to refer to events in the past which happened before other events in the past. (past perfect happens before the past simple)
Past perfect simple refers to finished events.

Uses:
To describe a continuing unfinished action in the past. (whenever I visited him, he was working in his garden)
For a continuing unfinished action interrupted by a sudden past action (while I was washing the dishes)

For past habits and routines, usually with a time expression
